every time i try to start a match making game on halo 3 it always says "one or more players do not have the required maps to play in this play list". do i need to download some maps? if so what maps?

yes, the maps you will need may cost you depending on what playlist.
free playlists (no dlc maps or free dlc maps): Lone wolves, Squad battle (ranked), Team objective (social), MLG (hardcore)
