Are fishing rods from wal mart reliable?
Use : be able to bring 20 inch bluefish up from a pier without breaking.
my father has old ass fishing rods. from the 80′s and they were all like 10 bucks each with a reel. and they do their job great and never broke. but there getting old. they look ugly. they are heavier than newer rods. their reels are just so old and full of shit its harder to reel. and i am sick of just fishing for spot fish at the piers. and my dad gets all the blues.
so i wanna buy my own blue fishing rods.
i mean i am not going to be a pro fisherman and only go fishing a few times a year. i don’t neeed a 300 dollar fishing rod. . .I went to walmart and saw plenty of medium/heavy action rods w/ reel for 20 bucks. from a company called daiwa.
thing is from what my dad says. that hose things are weak. they will just snap at the pier. their too thick and very unflexible. and he says all fishing rods from wal mart are trash. he says only buy a fishing rod from a tackle shop. he even said sports authority has trash rods. and he says buying a rod for over 40 bucks is bull shit. cause he knows he got his for 10 lol. and a ugly stick cost like 80. . .
well what do you guys think? have you tried em?
thanks guys. i mean my dads been fishin but i doubt he’s "up to date" with things and he is no professional fisherman. so i can’t just listen to everything he says.,
my dad has 60 lb line and 100 lb on some. but those things cost $$$$$$
shiet think i can handle blues with 20 lb mono? i will have a wire leader. durrrr.
but than again my dad needs those strong lines for tautog! lol thats some intense fishing. like the inlet ones. go to jersey for those fishiesss. mmm taste so good raw. sashimi those shiets.

It’s not necessarily the store, it’s the brand. There are ugly stiks at Wal-Mart for about 25 or 30 bucks. They are well worth the money. And yea Daiwa is a pretty good brand, I doubt they will break from blues. 20 or 25 pd mono should do fine. Ugly stiks are virtually unbreakable so if you’re looking for flexibility, there you go. Most Shakespeare rods that are designed for freshwater that are at least 6′ 6" could do the job as well. Look around, you can get a nice rod/reel combo for under 40 at Wal-Mart that will do fine for blues.
look at the rods online at the walmart website and read the reviews, i dont buy anything without reading reviews, they are very helpful
Get the Ugly Stick! Yes they cost about $30 but they won’t break. I have never broken one yet
